Joe Hooker Replaces Ambrose Burnside as
Commander of the Army of the Potomac
During the American Civil War

On this day in 1863, Ambrose Burnside was relieved of command of the Army of the Potomac and replaced by "Figting Joe" Hooker after the disaster in the Battle of Fredricksburg.

The Fredricksburg Campaign was an attempt by Burnside to regain the initiative against Lee's army after Lincoln became frustrated with the lack of action by McClellan who was Burnside's predecessor.
