The First Successful Human Kidney Transplant is Performed
On this day in 1954, Dr. Joseph E. Murray performed the first successful human kidney transplant. The kidney was from an adult to his identical twin.
The development of anti-rejection drugs developed in the 1960's allowed Murray to perform transplants between unrelated donors.
