New England's Dark Day Occurs
On this day in 1780, an event that would become known as
New England's Dark Day occurred. The darkness became so intense that people had to use candles in the middle of the day.
Many in the religious community at the time believed it was a biblical prophecy signaling the end of times but researchers have since shown that it was likely smoke from forest fires in Ontario, Canada that caused the event.
