Root Beer is Invented by Charles Elmer Hires

On this day in 1866, Charles Elmer Hires, a pharmacist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, formulated the Hires Root Beer Beverage.

Hires was originally going to call his new drink "root tea" but decided "root beer" would be more appealing to the working class.
