The Panama Canal is Formally Opened
On this day in 1914, the Panama Canal was formally opened allowing the passage of the cargo ship Ancon.
The canal which resulted in the death of 5,609 workers took seven years from the time of the appointment of the
Chief Engineer by Roosevelt until the time of completion, two years ahead of schedule.
