ON THIS DAY IN UNITED STATES HISTORY
June 8, 1959
The U.S. Post Office Department Makes its First
Attempt at Delivery by Missle Mail
On this day in 1959, The United States Post Office Department (which would later become the United States Postal
Service), would make its first attempt at delivering mail using a missile. Although this delivery method had been
attempted by others, as early as the 1930's, some believe that the advanced technology would make Missle Mail (or
Rocket Mail), the wave of the future. The delivery was successful from a technological standpoint but it never
caught on because it could not be justified economically.
