The Only President to...

Pierce was one of only two presidents to "affirm" his oath of office rather than swear it. Two month before, he and his family were involved in a train derailment which resulted in the death of his 11 year old son. This shook his faith which is why he chose to "affirm" on a law book rather than "swear" on a bible.
