January 28, 1915

The United States Coast Guard is Established
by an Act of the United States Congress

On this day in 1915, the United States Congress established the Coast Guard which is a military branch that has low enforcement as one of its responsibilities.

It is further defined by Title 14 of the U.S. code as "...a military service and a branch of the armed forces of the United States at all times. The Coast Guard shall be a service in the Department of Homeland Security, except when operating as a service in the Navy."
