Lancaster, Pennsylvania Becomes the Capital
of The United States for One Day
On this day in 1777, the Capital of the United States was moved to Lancaster, Pennsylvania when the Continental
Congress was forced to flee Philadelphia which had been captured by the British during the American Revolutionary
War.
After meeting one day, the Capital was moved further away to York, Pennsylvania where it remained until June of
1778.
