ON THIS DAY IN UNITED STATES HISTORY
June 28, 1969
The Stonewall Riots Occur
On this day in 1969, a riot occurred at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village in New York when police raided a
bar frequented by gays. Although it wasn't the first time police had raided a gay bar, the situation on this day
quickly got out of control, a crowd gathered, and a riot began. This is considered to be the first time that people
in the homosexual community decided to fight back against a system that often persecuted sexual minorities. This
event is considered one of the defining events that marked the start of the gay rights movement.
