ON THIS DAY IN UNITED STATES HISTORY

December 25, 1837

The United States Defeats the Seminole
Native American Indians in the
Battle of Lake Okeechobee

On this day in 1837, the United States 6th Infantry Regiment, led by Zachary Taylor defeated a group of approximately 400 Seminoles led by Billy Bowlegs. At least that's the story according to the United States version of events.

Both sides claimed victory but this battle resulted in the nickname Taylor acquired of "Old Rough and Ready". Both sides lived to fight another day and Taylor would be elected as the United States twelfth President in 1848. He died just 16 months into his term.
