Tennessee Becomes the First U.S. State to be
Readmitted Into the Union After the American Civil War
On this day in 1866, Tennessee is readmitted into the Union more than a year after the American Civil War
ended.
It was one of the last states to secede from the Union and one of only four to seceded after the attack on Fort
Sumter on April 12, 1861.
