ON THIS DAY IN UNITED STATES HISTORY
August 24, 1814
The British Invade Washington D.C. and Burn the
the White House and Other Government Buildings
On this day in 1814, British forces invaded Washington D.C. and destroyed virtually all of the government
buildings.
The invasion by British forces was during the War of 1812, partly in retaliation for the burning of the
British Parliament buildings during the Battle of York (now Toronto).
