Sherman's "March to the Sea" Concludes
With the Fall of Savannah, Georgia
in the American Civil War

On this day in 1864, Savannah, Georgia fell to Union General William Tecumseh Sherman and his troops. This was the final step in Sherman's famous "March to the Sea".

The goal of the campaign which began November 15, was to not only capture Savannah but to inflict serious damage to the South both financially and psychologically along the way. This action was a significant factor in bringing about the surrender of the South six months later.
