The First Geneva Convention Was Adopted for the
Amelioration of the Condition of the Wounded
in Armies in the Field
On this day in 1864, the First Geneva Convention was adopted to establish legally binding rules for the
protection of wounded soldiers, field medical personnel and other humanitarian institutions in an armed
conflict.
Since then, it has been modified and expanded. The most recent was in 2005 with Protocol III relating to the
Adoption of an Additional Distinctive Emblem (for medical services).
