ON THIS DAY IN UNITED STATES HISTORY
October 20, 1818
The Treaty of 1818 is Signed Between the
United States and Great Britain
On this day in 1818, the U.S. and Great Britain signed a treaty to resolve long standing border issues between
the two nations with respect to the Canada / U.S. border.
Both sides gave up certain territory to reach the compromise which resulted in the U.S. giving up the northern tip
of the territory of Louisiana (now Alberta Canada). This was the last major territorial loss of the Continental
United States.
