British General Charles Cornwallis Surrenders to
American General George Washington in the American
Revolutionary War
On this day in 1781, Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington after the Siege of Yorktown in the American
Revolutionary War.
Although it did not mark the end of the war, it was a decisive victory by the combined forces of American General
George Washington and French General Comte de Rochambeau. This defeat, eventually lead the British government to
negotiate an end to the conflict.
