President Jimmy Carter Freezes
All Iranian Assets in the U.S.
On this day in 1979, President Jimmy Carter froze all Iranian assets in the U.S. in response to the storming of
the U.S. Embassy by an estimated 3,000 extremists resulting in 66 U.S. diplomats being taken hostage.
Some of the hostages were released throughout the next several months, however 52 were held for 444 days. They were
finally released January 20, 1981, just minutes after Ronald Reagan was sworn in as the new president of the United
States.
