December 14, 1903

The Wright Brothers Make Their
First Attempt at Powered Flight

On this date in 1903 the Wright brothers made their first attempt at powered flight in the Wright Flyer at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

The first attempt was unsuccessful when Wilbur tried to climb too quickly which resulted in a stall. The aircraft hit the ground with minor damage.

Three days later, Orville succeeded in traveling 120 feet in a flight that lasted 12 seconds.
