The Battle of Lake Erie is Fought
On this day in 1813, one of the largest naval battles in the War of 1812 occured between the Americans led by
Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry and the British led by Commander Robert Heriot Barclay.
The battle which included nine vessels on the American side vs. six on the British side raged for about three hours
before the British were forced to surrender ensuring American control of the lake for the remainder of the war.
