"Sam and Friends" Debuts on Local Television (The Precursor to Kermit the Frog and the Muppets)

On this day in 1955, Jim Henson and what would become Kermit the Frog appeared on television (WRC-TV) for the first time in Washington D.C.

The original live-action puppet show was called Sam and Friends and featured a bald human-like puppet named Sam and several friends including a lizard-like creature named Kermit who would eventually evolve into Kermit the Frog.
