The Fourteenth Amendment to the
United States Constitution is Ratified
On this day in 1868, the fourteenth amendment to the Constitution was ratified to provide a broader definition
of a citizen of the United States.
This amendment effectively overruled the famous Dred Scott decision in 1857 which had excluded slaves and their
descendants.
