ON THIS DAY IN UNITED STATES HISTORY
August 8, 1863
General Robert E. Lee Sends a Letter
of Resignation to Confederate President Jefferson Davis
On this day in 1863, a month after the brutal defeat of confederate forces in Gettysburg, General Rober E. Lee
offers his letter of resignation to Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
In the resignation letter, he expressed support of the Confederacy and his dissapointment in himself for his
mistakes at leadership. The letter was more than just a formality that often happens when a great leader makes a
blunder. It seemed as if he was convinced that someone else might be better suited to the job. The Resignation is
immediately refused.
