ON THIS DAY IN UNITED STATES HISTORY

June 7, 1776

The Lee Resolution is Proposed Declaring the Thirteen
Colonies to be Independent of the British Empire

On this day in 1776, the Lee Resolution, also known as the Resolution of Independence was proposed by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia based on the instructions he received from the Virginia Conventions.

Support for independence was finally achieved and approved on July 2, 1776. The Declaration of Independence which formally explaining the reason for the approval of the resolution, was approved on July 4.

This marks the date that we celebrate our independence even though the delegates did not sign the Declaration of Independence until August 2 after hundreds of copies had been distributed to the public.
