ON THIS DAY IN UNITED STATES HISTORY

June 3, 1864

The Battle of Cold Harbor is Fought
In the American Civil War

On this day in 1864, the Battle of Cold Harbor is fought when the Union army under General Ulysses S. Grant attacked the Confederate army in Cold Harbor, Virginia. Although Grant’s forces outnumbered Lee’s almost two to one, the Confederates held fast and delivered the Union a bloody defeat.

The Battle of Cold Harbor is considered one of the bloodiest and lopsided battles in American history. Grant later said in his memoirs “I have always regretted that the last assault at Cold Harbor was ever made . . . no advantage whatever was gained to compensate for the heavy loss we sustained.”.
