The Empire State Building is Officially Opened
On this day in 1931, the Empire State building was officially opened when the current United States President
Herbert Hoover turned on the building lights with the push of a button from Washington, D.C.
The building was completed in just 410 days and at the time was the tallest building in the world. It would remain
the tallest building until 1967 when it was surpassed by the Ostankino Tower in Moscow, Russia.
