The Battle of Gettysburg Begins
in the American Civil War
On this day in 1863, the Battle of Gettysburg began when two divisions of Confederates on their way to
Gettysburg ran into a Union cavalry. When word reached Lee, he quickly sends 25,000 troops.
By the time Lee himself arrived at the scene, he saw the Federal troops being pushed through town to the high
ground near the cemetery on the south side of town where they took the opportunity to dig in.
